Joy above all circumstances

Day 34 (09 Sept 2017, Saturday)

Our moods do rise and fall like the ocean waves.  We can be happy at this moment but, the next moment, quickly sink into depression.  Happiness is unpredictable as it depends on some favourable circumstances.  Joy, on the other hand, is constant as it looks towards a faithful and unchanging God.  Though the harvest failed and the farm animals died, Habakkuk could still rejoice in God.

“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord;  I will take joy in the God of my salvation”  (Habakkuk 3:17-18).

Why?  Because he knew that God is trustworthy and He will prove His faithfulness once again in the midst of such national crisis.  Joy births forth when one comes to experience the truth of God.

Writing from prison where he was incarcerated, Paul encouraged believers yet with a triumphant message:  “Rejoice in the Lord always.  Again I will say, rejoice” (Philippians 4:4).

Instead of constantly being worn down by the negative circumstances we face and unfavourable remarks we hear each day, we can now learn to put our hope in the One who causes the morning sun to rise.  Choose, therefore, to rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, (and) be constant in prayer (Romans 12:12).

Pray for Strong Discipleship in the communities of faith

Pray that we will be obedient to the mandate given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ, when He instructs us to “go and make disciples of all nations”, thus fulfilling the Great Commission in our generation.

Pray that we will love people by praying for them, as well as caring nurturing them practically in their growth.  That we have willingness to invest our time and resources in the lives of new believers.  That we will willingly embrace them in our families, in our churches and even into our homes.

Pray that we will teach the whole counsel of God and to be truthful in both Word and life so as to set a Christ-like example for others to imitate.

The purifying influence of hope

Day 33 (08 Sept 2017, Friday)

“Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.  And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure” (1 John 3:2-3).

When Christ returns, believers will be transformed into His image.  When we meditate on this blessed hope-we will be like Christ one day - we will be inspired to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12) and strive to overcome our evil propensities (Luke 9:23).

Purity implies turning away from what the world loves (1 John 2:15 - 17).  We need to draw close to Christ like the branches that abide in the vine (John 15:4), surrender ourselves to God and renew our minds with effort to supplement our faith with goodness, knowledge,             self-control, endurance, godliness, mutual affection and love (2 Peter 1:5-10).  Realising that we will be like Him when He returns should encourage us to walk in purity and righteousness.

However, it does not mean we can do it on our own strength.  As we spend time in God’s presence, we will gradually be transformed by the Holy Spirit into His likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18).  Ask the Lord to realign our minds and our hearts to His, so that our prayers will not be a bitter reaction to our circumstances but an assertive response to God’s agenda and purpose for this nation.

Pray for the Children of our Land

Pray for an increase in proper child care awareness among parents and care-takers in regards to the welfare and safety of the children.
Pray that children themselves will be educated and well informed to guard against any physical or sexual violations.

Pray for children growing up in Christian homes to be well trained and rooted in the ways of God so that they will not deviate from the path of truth all the days of their life.
Pray that parents will have an understanding of the times and the wisdom on how to raise a godly offspring.

Pray that the hearts and minds of the children will be guarded from ungodly influence from their surroundings and media.  Instead, pray that children who are exposed to the God will influence their peers with godly principles and values even in their young age.

Restoring our first love

Day 32 (07 Sept 2017, Thursday)

The church at Ephesus was commended in their:  1) Performance - they excelled in good works;  2) Purity of doctrine - they discerned and overcame false doctrine;  and 3)  Perseverance - they endured hardship.  But they failed in this one area:  ‘first love’.

“I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, …I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary.  But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.  Remember therefore from where you have fallen;  repent, and do the works you did at first…. “ (Revelation 2:2-5).

Hope in God produces faith in Christ Jesus and it motivates us to love all the saints (Colossians 1:4-5).  “First love” is the glow and excitement we had when we first believed in Christ.  With great joy, we served God and testified for Him.  But as we progressed in our spiritual walk, things became routine.  Neither do we spontaneously burst out in worship nor do we seek Him or serve others as earnestly as we used to.

We are called to love God by obeying His commandments (John 14:20), and our good works must be motivated by love (1 Corinthians 13:3).  We must not be driven by our selfish motives like seeking after money, fame or satisfying our personal pride.  It is time for us to examine our hearts and be restored in our first love for Him.  It will be easier for us to pray with compassion when we love our nation and people with the love of God.

Pray for the Youth of our Land

Pray for God to ignite the fire of revival among the youths, that they will grow up to be men and women who are passionate about the Lord Jesus Christ, and they will have a strong witness among their peers.
Pray for every hindrance to be removed in their spiritual walk with God.

Pray for anointing and strength of God to rest upon the youth pastors, leaders and workers, for them to have vision and courage to spearhead new things, and for a strong mentoring from the spiritual “fathers and mothers” around them who will stand with them through thick and thin.

Pray for Christian fellowships to be established and to grow in schools, colleges and universities, so that this vast mission field will witness a tremendous harvest.

Foolish

Today's Scripture: Proverbs 26 (KJV)

Proverbs 26 (KJV)
1 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

2 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

6 He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.

7 The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

8 As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.

9 As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouths of fools.

10 The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.

11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.

12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

14 As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

15 The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.

16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

17 He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

18 As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,

19 So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

20 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

22 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

23 Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;

25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

26 Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

28 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

Scripture Meaning

Verses
1: Honour is out of season to those unworthy and unfit for it.
(2). He that is cursed without cause, the curse shall do him no more harm than the bird that flies over his head.
(3). Every creature must be dealt with according to its nature, but careless and profligate sinners never will be ruled by reason and persuasion. Man indeed is born like the wild ass's colt; but some, by the grace of God, are changed.
(4,5). We are to fit our remarks to the man, and address them to his conscience, so as may best end the debate.
(6-9). Fools are not fit to be trusted, nor to have any honour. Wise sayings, as a foolish man delivers and applies them, lose their usefulness.
(10). This verse may either declare how the Lord, the Creator of all men, will deal with sinners according to their guilt, or, how the powerful among men should disgrace and punish the wicked. (11). The dog is a loathsome emblem of those sinners who return to their vices, (2Peter 2:22).
(12). We see many a one who has some little sense, but is proud of it. This describes those who think their spiritual state to be good, when really it is very bad.
(13). The slothful man hates every thing that requires care and labour. But it is foolish to frighten ourselves from real duties by fancied difficulties. This may be applied to a man slothful in the duties of religion.
(14). Having seen the slothful man in fear of his work, here we find him in love with his ease. Bodily ease is the sad occasion of many spiritual diseases. He does not care to get forward with his business. Slothful professors turn thus. The world and the flesh are hinges on which they are hung; and though they move in a course of outward services, yet they are not the nearer to heaven.
(15). The sluggard is now out of his bed, but he might have lain there, for any thing he is likely to bring to pass in his work. It is common for men who will not do their duty, to pretend they cannot. Those that are slothful in religion, will not be at the pains to feed their souls with the bread of life, nor to fetch in promised blessings by prayer.
(16). He that takes pains in religion, knows he is working for a good Master, and that his labour shall not be in vain.
(17). To make ourselves busy in other men's matters, is to thrust ourselves into temptation.
(18,19). He that sins in jest, must repent in earnest, or his sin will be his ruin.
(20-22). Contention heats the spirit, and puts families and societies into a flame. And that fire is commonly kindled and kept burning by whisperers and backbiters.
(23). A wicked heart disguising itself, is like a potsherd covered with the dross of silver.
(24-26). Always distrust when a man speaks fair unless you know him well. Satan, in his temptations, speaks fair, as he did to Eve; but it is madness to give credit to him.
(27). What pains men take to do mischief to others! but it is digging a pit, it is rolling a stone, hard work; and they prepare mischief to themselves.
(28). There are two sorts of lies equally detestable. A slandering lie, the mischief of this every body sees. A flattering lie, which secretly works ruin. A wise man will be more afraid of a flatterer than of a slanderer.

Scripture Application

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue with the Book of Proverbs with Chapter 26. In our text today we continue with wisdom for leaders with a look on foolishness.

In making application we see those who depend on there own wisdom verses the wisdom of the Lord are really unwise or what the Bible describes as foolish which ends up being unfruitful. How about you? Do you depend on your own wisdom verses the wisdom of the Lord in the Bible? Let us learn from our text today to see that when we depend on our own wisdom over the Lord's Wisdom that we end up with what the Bible calls foolish.

Faith that is founded on hope

Day 31 (06 Sept 2017, Wednesday)

Our faith is built on the hope that we have in God.  Because our hope is sure, our faith should be active and alive.  It should not merely be an intellectual assent or words we confess.  It should be acted out on a daily basis.

Paul in Ephesians 2:10 elaborates further of this faith.  “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  James exhorts believers in Christ to live out their faith with real substance.  “Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?  You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works” (James 2:21-22).

How should our hope in God influence our living for Him?  Are we living the way that reflects the hope that we have in God?

Pray for the Spiritual Leaders of our Land

Pray that our spiritual leaders will be strengthened both spiritually and physically to continue their work and fulfil the vision or goals for the Kingdom of God.

Pray that support and encouragement will be given to these leaders from the members of their churches.

Pray for God’s covering and protection to be upon their spouses, children and other family members and everything that concerns them, that they may give themselves fully to the Lord’s work.

Pray that their personal time in seeking God will not be hindered by their busyness and outward distractions and that they will be able to mentor others and multiply themselves so that they can pass the baton on to the next generation of leadership in the Church.

Hope in the midst of despair

Day 30 (05 Sept 2017, Tuesday)

If we have ever been led by God, along the journey of our life, to a point where we feel that we have lost all our hope, it is there we have to remind ourselves that God has a purpose for doing so.
His intention is always to allow us to experience Him deeper, in a sense, that Christ is our hope in the midst of our despair.  We shall then encounter Christ more through this experience.

The essence of Abraham’s faith is to believe that God makes that which is impossible possible.  This faith has enabled him to experience God’s faithfulness continually in his life, and to witness the effect of his faith.

There is a chain effect in this blessed life of Abraham.  He was blessed and his descendants throughout all generations were to be blessed as well.

God expects His people to seek His face earnestly through their prayers in days of despair.  It is when man’s might and wisdom comes to an end, and in the event that he has nowhere to turn to, that the relationship between God and man will be knitted closely.
It is by then that man begins comprehend that God is worthy of all honour, authority and glory.

Let’s unite our hearts and pray with one voice, asking for the light of God to shine forth in our nation, so that all men shall know, that apart from Jesus Christ, no man is capable of lighting up the nation.
Only He is able to rise and shine forth His great and mighty deeds.

Pray for the Communities we live in

Pray for the salvation of our communities.
Pray that as an individual or as a church, we will reach out intentionally by building relationship with them and serving as a blessing to them in times of need.

Pray for the Members of Parliament (MPs) and the constituencies that they represent, in that they will carry out their work well in ways that build up and benefit the communities as a whole within their constituencies.

Pray for the residents in communities to be set free to know our Lord Jesus Christ personally and there will be an increase of creative ways for us to reach out to the lost and the needy.

Principles of faith

Day 29 (04 Sept 2017, Monday )

We need to possess the correct kind of faith as we live in an era where values, including the economic and political systems are in the state of chaos and spun into hopelessness.  The principle of this faith lies in Abraham, where “in hope he believed against hope.”
What acted against this hope was the decrease of all his natural and physical strengths, “…when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb” (Romans 4:19).  And yet he could proudly say, the resurrected Christ is my only hope.  “…Christ in you… the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).

Ask God to help us to look at His promises, to which we will built the foundation of our faith upon the Word of God.
Many times, our faith is weakened because of what we see with our eyes and the reality that is laid before us.

Our perspectives will only lead us to pessimism and despair. Only when our principle of faith is put at the right perspective, and we allow God’s Word to take root in our life as our sure foundation, then nothing, be it troubles or testing, can possibly separate us from the love of God.

We must learn to rely on God more when we go through all these tests and is best done through our fervent and steadfast prayers.  We can declare by faith, that God will surely accomplish great things, and no one is able to hinder or stop Him from doing so.

Pray for the Church in our nation

Pray that the Church will be an agent of hope and love for our nation.
Pray that church members will not be complacent but instead be active in reaching out to the lost and discipling new believers in Christ Jesus.

Pray for a revival to take place among those who have lost their first love for Jesus.
Pray that we will be diligent in strengthening the weak, working together in unity and to have a greater lover for one another.

Pray for the five-fold ministry (Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers) to be established in every church in order to equip all the saints for the service of His Kingdom.

Sunday 3 September 2017

Faith to live by the things we hope for

Day 28 (03 Sept 2017, Sunday)

Since we are Abraham’s offspring, we have to ask God for the same faith that Abraham had - faith to live by the things we hope for (Hebrews 11:1).  Abraham trusted God fully in all His promises, and he had no room for doubt in his heart.

It was such faith that drove him to leave his own country, his kindred and his father’s house.  It was also such faith that compelled him to receive his nephew, Lot, with a magnanimous hear.  It was indeed such faith that he waited patiently for his promised son, Isaac, with much perseverance.
It was such faith in the One who calls into existence the things that do not exist, and the One who raises the dead to life, that he subsequently offered his beloved son, Isaac, to God in obedience.

The faith of Abraham was not lived out in the good seasons of his life where it was smooth and under control, but also when it was difficult, challenging and inconvenient.

Such faith enables us to be staunch when we are faced with challenges and difficulties.  It also enables us to live out a godly lifestyle amidst the hardships that we encounter.
What is more precious to us is that there is a need right now in Malaysia for the people of faith to influence others around them who are lost and persist on with our fervent prayers and life testimonies!

Pray for Family life and influence

Pray for the strengthening of family relationships, between and children, and among siblings.
Pray for parents to be good role models for their children.  Pray for the healing and restoration of broken homes.

Pray for a deeper communication and understanding as well as love and forgiveness to fill each and every home.
Pray for God’s protection over families and against the enemy who seeks to bring strife, divorce and many unwanted incidents among married couples and family members.

Pray for strong discipleship efforts to be exemplified by parents within their homes, and for family prayer altars to be established to make Christ Jesus as the Master of their families.
